Sarah Jay, Vice President – North America Region of SCAD Engineering Consultants LLC, in an interaction with Business Inside Reporter, shares her insights on present state and future opportunities for the construction services industry.

Steel Detailing & shop drawing services has come a long way. Starting from drawings on actual paper to a complete digital interface being used now we have come to the stage of automating a lot of work without human intervention. We are pretty new in this space yet it has been an incredible journey so far and with the advancement in technology this journey is getting better each passing day.
We as a company are looking to revamp our infrastructure in a not so conventional way. If a companies existing infrastructure is not equipped to handle the volume and the variety of jobs they will end up with extreme inferior outputs & quality which may hamper effective business outcomes. Construction services got impacted due to COVID-19 pandemic, however, we were liaising with all of our clients spread across the globe to ensure no gap in communication by working multiple shifts. During this time we started collaborating with service partners in the same industry to ensure tight deadlines and schedules are met in order to reduce our dependency on few teams while being competitive at the same time.
Recently, we further strengthened our quality checking phase on every job by collaborating with another engineering firm which does one extra level of checking and appointed them as an advisory before the drawings are delivered after thorough scrutiny. This single innovative move has helped our customers gain humongous confidence in our work since there is an additional level of quality checking before the drawings go out which prevents wastage of time working on major errors during critical final phases of project completion.
We would be soon witnessing the advent of new technologies which will provide a lot of automation across the industry but our innovative method of extra quality checks by third parties will continue since we are confident of this method which has been very successful for both us and our clients when done by an unbiased expert in the same field.
With the growing numbers of detailing firms acrosss the globe, organizations should be cognizant of the fact that fabricators are now being approached by a lot of small companies claiming to be large but are actually untrusted part-timers who can can effectively ruin the quality of jobs. As part of our future innovative ideas we are working on a strategy to identify the same which will be a game changer and especially benefit fabricators and General Contractors by filtering out unneceassary approaches made by such individuals or firms while putting thier projects at stake.

Being on high priority to the construction industry the future outlook of the Steel detailing & shop drawings sector remains bright.
